On Easter Monday 2021, Christoph Schoener gave a concert in Mettingen and let Mozart’s majestic sounds resound on the organ of the parish church of St. Agatha as part of meetMUSIC. Due to the Corona lockdown, Schoener’s impressive play could only be transmitted virtually. Nevertheless, the enthusiasm of the spectators in front of the screens was enormous.

After giving up his position as church music director in Hamburg in 2019, Schoener continues to give concerts on the organ and record CDs. Mozart transcriptions for this instrument are considered his hobbyhorse. His recording of a pure Mozart program from 2022 on the sensational organ of the church St. Jakobi in Stralsund is highly praised, which “contains many a trouvaille and is played in Schoener’s manner,” as Klassik Heute writes.

The meetMUSIC team is very pleased that the contact with Professor Christoph Schoener, one of the most renowned church musicians of his generation, still exists. According to Schoener, the concert in Mettingen, which he remembers fondly, was a building block in his success with works by Mozart on the organ. And who knows? Maybe there will be a comeback with spectators in 2024 … We’ll keep you posted.
